Magnetic Snap

August 20, 2007 by Tsoniki 4 Comments

I have plans to make a diaper bag for this new baby. I know exactly which pattern I am buying (this one over at Etsy from Craft Apple) and she just posted a quick tutorial on how to put on a magnetic snap. That looks so easy! Okay so I’ve never put a magnetic snap on anything, but doesn’t that look easy?

I’m not sure how I feel – boy or girl – so I haven’t bought the pattern yet because I’d like to get the ‘right’ material. Not necessarily pink or blue, but just the right kind. My Mom is coming to visit at the end of September so I may buy it before she gets here so she can help me pick material and maybe even help me make it. She’s such a great seamstress, she could probably get it done in a day.

Design on TV

August 16, 2007 by Tsoniki Leave a Comment

Is anyone watching Design Star on HGTV? I found it during the second show and LOVE it! The last episode had them doing an individual challenge of designing a small’ish room with a couch, coffee table and bookcase in it. And the key was they had to do all of their shopping at a 99 cent store! Too fun. Scott had to leave and I have to say I really liked him. I thought the one to go should have been Josh. He used shiny mirror like bags or mirrors all over the room and it was just way too much.

Oh and when they get kicked off the show, they are told that their show has been cancelled – because they are competing for their own show on HGTV! How cool is that. I love it.

I love setting up a house but I don’t think I’ve ever finished setting one up. Sure the first house I lived in (after moving out of my Mom’s place) was easy to decorate – I was young and just hung up a few autographed pictures of cute country singers and a thing for my mail. Easy! In college I decorated my dorm room (I requested and got a single room) and that was fun – I hung up posters and pictures on the wall plus had the cork board decorated too. When I got a roommate I don’t think I hung up anything around the main area of the house, just in my room. I think we had a bunch of posters everywhere otherwise. And the places Chris and I have lived together I halfway decorate, thinking I need to do something (paint) before finishing stuff (like hanging pictures). I finally have pictures hung up though we do still need to paint.

Of course now I’m thinking of what to change for decorations in the house – when really I should finish hanging up pictures then go back and paint a room at a time. I think I’ve said I’m going to paint a room at a time for at least six months so far. *sigh*

Curriculum – Last Day of Homeschooling Week

August 11, 2007 by Tsoniki 2 Comments

Curriculum
What curriculum do you use? Where do you buy it? Have you found a “gem” that you must share with others? Was something in particular a complete failure for you and your kids?

We were out and about all day yesterday but I didn’t want to miss out on the last day of the week of homeschooling!

I love that Randi posted the curriculum list for her daughter’s first grade year. Alice is starting first grade as well…and I have to say we have probably three times as many books as Randi! But that’s the worksheet/’playing school’ person in me that picked those. Sure Alice wanted one here or there, and most are a continuation of the kindergarten version of the book, but I realize we probably won’t get to all of them – and that’s okay.

I think of my neighbors when I think of how long school ‘should’ last. I know the oldest daughter follows a curriculum and has work to do for three to four hours a day. Last year I think we only spent about an hour a day really doing stuff – sure we cooked, crafted, did flash cards, played with a Barbie computer (said Christmas gift that still rocks the house) and more – but only about an hour was spent on worksheets and structured sitting down and working together time. I remember trying to stretch that to two hours but Alice just wasn’t having it. I agree with the thinking that kids will get it, work with them, don’t force, and they’ll just catch on. Sure they need to keep learning and moving forward, but it’ll happen. I like to think I don’t stress about stuff, but I’m sure my Mom would remind me of times that I have. 😉

I remember when Alice learned a concept with addition – she was counting on her fingers but say it was 4 + 5, she would count four on one hand, then five on the other, then count them all together. Then one day it hit her – she had five fingers already so bam start counting at five, eliminating a step. Seeing her so excited to realize that was awesome.

And so far I’ve bought the curriculum online or at Barnes & Noble (where I should buy stock, I’m so not kidding!). Every time we are in there I’m looking for a new workbook or a new book for the kids area in the house. I like the Evan Moor workbooks. I did venture into at least looking for a full on curriculum from a publisher but got overwhelmed very fast.

Bird Magnet Board

August 9, 2007 by Tsoniki 2 Comments

Fred Flare hearts me! And I heart them right back. Have you been to Fred Flare? I usually go look and I just now realized they had a blog. I ordered a few items and they showed up yesterday!

PLUS

And you get this:

Is that not the cutest magnet board you have ever seen? I love it! This is right above my sewing machine and I plan on using it as an inspiration board. There are so many things I want to sew, work on or finish I can easily put them up there. I am also going to make a covered corkboard and hang it next to the bird.

Emotibuds too! These are little clip on things for your ipod earbuds. I’ve been looking around for new headphones/buds but not finding anything I love. But the emotibuds are very cute! Alice loved them and she wanted to open all three packages but I stopped her. These ones are the starry eyed, I also got the smiling and laughing ones.

And for a bit of crafty – I laid them on the baby blanket I a crocheting. I think I am 10 rows in now? It is fairly long though so I wonder what I got myself into…

I Wish I Knew

August 9, 2007 by Tsoniki 4 Comments

If I had only known…

I wonder if we have been schooling long enough to have an ‘if only I knew’ moment? If my kids had it their way we would ‘do school’ every day, all day long. They are my kids after all and I’m the one who went home with all the extra worksheets once school ended and forced my brothers to play school at any chance I could get.

It is funny to have Chris come home, ask how the day went, and have Alice say “we didn’t do any school work all day!”

I am glad I haven’t bought a huge set of curriculum, I’m glad that what we have done all along has continued to work and I’m glad we have neighbors who also homeschool. I’m glad Chris agrees this is the right thing to do.
