B is for Babies & Books

August 4, 2007 by Tsoniki Leave a Comment

B is for Babies…I am feeling big now. I’m 18 weeks’ish now and feel like when I walk my belly is leading the way, not true of course, not yet anyway. Chris says you can tell I am pregnant, I’m thinking I’m just looking extra fluffy. Hahaha Via the really cool pregnancy website, 3DPregnancy, we got to see a 3d picture of the baby and found that she is 8 inches long now! That seems big, but not at the same time. My pants aren’t fitting and I am loving stretchy clothes. I’m sure within the next couple of weeks I’ll look more pregnant.

The kids excitement is big and loud enough for everyone. We talk about the baby at least every day, if not more. They did stop asking if I was keeping the baby warm if I covered up, but do ask if it is the baby who wanted orange juice or a chicken strip. Of course I say yes. We go in at the end of the month for an ultrasound and could find out the sex (pending the baby’s cooperation of course!) but I don’t think we are going to. We have a girl and boy now, and though we found out with Jake, we didn’t with Alice but just knew. I feel like I know now, but it feels different once in a while, so who knows what that means!

In other baby new I started crocheting a baby blanket yesterday! It’s just like the blue one I made a few months ago but with softer yarn and bigger. It is so early I’m hoping I can crank out three of them fairly quickly – one for the new baby and one for each of my baby nephews. I’m making all of them yellow and white (just because that’s the yarn I have!) and with different lines of patterns so they won’t completely match.

And Books! I don’t have anything to read since finishing Harry Potter. I’m debating rereading 100 Years of Solitude (one of THE best books ever and definitely high up on my favorite list) but considering it’s the only Gabriel Garcia Marquez I’ve read, I think I need to branch out. I’m going to get Love in the Time of Cholera – John Cusack mentions the book in at least two movies (that I can remember) so why not.

A is for Albus

August 3, 2007 by Tsoniki Leave a Comment

It seems I missed the part about the Encyclopedia of Me Meme starting on the first! Ah well, since there are more days this month then alphabet letters, I’m sure I’m fine.

A is for Albus…I just finished reading book 7 of Harry Potter this morning. I was trying so hard to make the book last, to keep reading it for days, that I never even opened it until the day before yesterday. Then I read almost all of it last night, finishing up when I woke up this morning.

What can be said that hasn’t already been said? I liked the epilogue at the end though I wanted more – a chapter or two at least. I’ve read the interviews that J.K. did saying where the characters ended up, but I still wanted more after that. She certainly left the door open for more books – maybe not about Harry, but his kids (and friends kids).

I’m glad that Harry got to see that Snape loved Lily all of his life – and I didn’t get the connection of asking Harry to look at him before he died (since Harry and Lily had the same eyes) until I read it online a little while ago.

I loved this series. Sure it started out as a kids series (is it still considered one?) but J.K. has the great ability to age her characters – Harry’s transition over the seven years was very evident and well done. I never thought I’d get this invested in the books, I remember laughing at everyone making a big deal of it when the first one came out.

I did cry at the end of the book, well the last few chapters actually, though I don’t feel emotionally drained like I imagined I might. I’m just impressed that J.K. is such a fantastic story teller, that she was able to hold onto secrets of the book. I’ve had other books I’ve loved and reread over and over again and I can’t wait until my kids can read them, really read them and understand the characters and the complexity in the story.

A is also for Ah-choo – I got a cold and don’t feel that great. I plan on laying on the couch only getting up to take care of my kids, who, luckily for me, are quite content to have a day of laying on the couch with me.

Organizing and Sewing

July 31, 2007 by Tsoniki 6 Comments

I feel very spoiled.

Because of the layout of the house we turned one of the bedrooms into an office (which really is just a desk since we got the laptop a few months ago) and my sewing/craft/homeschool room. Which is more to say it is a very pretty, nicely organized storage area. I have all of this space available to me and I am not using it the best that I can!

I decided to change that today. I started cleaning off the sewing desk so I could sew a few things. I need to work on a rag quilt that I’ve had the material for, for YEARS…like three or four. I also want to make Alice a few easy dresses for the fall. And I have so many other projects in mind!

So I took all of the baskets and stuff piled on the desk and sorted it out. It was good timing as the electricity picked that moment to go out for about a half hour or so. The kids played checkers and cards while I sorted screws, beads, finished projects and Chris’ uniform items. Once that was done, I had three empty baskets! I’m sure they’ll be used very soon though.

Tomorrow I am going to move my pictures and prints (they are stacked up next to the sewing area) and get the two huge boxes of material out and see what I have. I’m sure I have plenty and could make more then a few dresses. I’m excited! I have a designated area for my stamping and card making and really need to use our space better. We are lucky to have a house this big and I doubt it’ll happen again for a very long time, might as well take advantage while we can!

Of course this helps get the home school stuff situated – it’s just about that time you know.

Stamps that look like sewing

July 30, 2007 by Tsoniki 4 Comments

This is by far some of the coolest things I’ve seen lately! I’ve been using my StumbleUpon button to browse for new craft sites and came across this tonight. Check out this page of stamps, they are the new images offered by Hot Potatoes, and they are sewing stuff! I love them! I’m so excited, I’m saving the site here so I know where to go back to when I want to order a stamp. There are buttons, a cross stitch stamp, a little spool of thread with “handmade by”, pins, a sewing machine. Ah, heaven. They look so very cool.

Altered Notebook

July 25, 2007 by Tsoniki 6 Comments

Well, kind of altered. Maybe more like covered. A few weeks ago one of my girlfriends started looking for wedding things – ideas for centerpieces, dresses, etc. – and she mentioned wanting a notebook to keep notes in. I’ve had a few moleskine (love them!) notebooks for a little while and wanted to cover one so I said I would and send it to her. Her colors were going to be a teal and chocolate brown. I wasn’t sure I could get the teal right, but I tried!

covered Moleskine notebook

I used a few different Stampin’ Up stamps and paper, and sparkly rhinestone things from A Muse. From the picture it looks like a lot of teal – but really it all blended very well. I used a few quotes (my favorite stamps are quotes) as well as the Doodle Alphabet stamp set for spelling out “Julie”. The two eyelets hold vellum onto the paper under them and can swing out so you can read the quote. Of course you can see it a lot better in person as well.

The chocolate brown paper was a lot of fun to do – I just used versamark ink for the stamp and didn’t put any embossing powder or such on it. I just stamped and then dried with with my heat gun. It just makes the mark stand out and looks so good!

The space in the middle is for a date – I’m not sure for 2007 or the full date or what. They have a tentative date right now, I think.

When I talked to her last she said the notebook was too nice to use and she hadn’t written in it yet! That made me laugh although I know how she feels. I just love how this came out – it took a couple to a few hours and after I was done stamping, figuring the layout took quite a bit! I’m happy with how it looks and so is Julie and her Mom so I figure it’s a good job.

I’ve done quite a few cards lately too – it feels really good to be back into crafting!
