Make – create – the act of doing something

And I’d love for you to do something and leave me a message! We live in the age of texting and sending quick messages to our friends and loved ones. I’ve love to hear from you. Record a message for up to 90 seconds and if it’s about the podcast or something to be shared, I may use your comments in a future podcast. 🙂

Head over to iTunes and subscribe to Me Being Crafty so you don’t miss an episode! You can also subscribe on stitcher.

Welcome to episode 010 of the Me Being Crafty podcast, where we explore creativity in your life.

mbc 300x300

In this episode I talk to Alison Dutton of Alison Sews about her return to sewing after not sewing for several years, and her experience with being a pattern tester for different projects. She recently wrote a pattern called Falling for a recent Oakshott Autumn blog hop, which I featured here. Alison and I also talk about her pattern and tutorial writing. She will be having a freezer paper tutorial coming soon and recently pattern tested the Tudor purse pattern. I can’t wait to see more tutorials and patterns from her!

Alison D

I recently found Alison’s blog and started reading, of course new blogs are started every day so I was interested in the fact that she was so active on other social media platforms (links below) and just started blogging. It’s true that writing and sharing on a website allows you the freedom to write about anything you are interested in, share steps to complete a project, and share more photos – especially compared to a quick picture on instagram.

Listen to episode 010 and let me know how you share your projects and ideas, are you blogging or just sharing a picture? Do you have the desire to share more? Share less?

Leave me a comment and let me know how you were creative today. Me, I’m home from a weekend in Paris and excited for what is to come with the podcast! Subscribe today so you don’t miss anything!

009: Alorha Baga

Welcome to episode 009 of the Me Being Crafty podcast, where we explore creativity in your life.

mbc 300x300

In this episode I talk to Alorha Baga, a beadwork designer, teacher, and youth group coordinator living near Lemoore CA. Alorha has been teaching beadwork classes for over four years and just this year she opened a studio in her home. She teaches the basics of beadwork and moves into specific stitches and projects. She loves teaching people to bead and sharing her knowledge. Alorha is also very involved in the local youth groups near the reservation where she and her family live and she has been for many years. I am happy to see her so involved with working with our young people, this is very important.

AlorhaBaga

Alorha’s Grandmother is from the Rosebud Reservation where I am from, and Alorha and I connected on facebook. She makes beautiful beadwork projects and I love seeing what she is working on. Thanks for being on the show Alorha!

If you can teach someone something creative, if you have the skills to teach beadwork or quilting or sewing or painting, I hope you are able to share your skills. Teaching others to do something feels good – we are able to share our knowledge and seeing the spark in someone’s eyes after you have taught them something is just a good thing. It’s like when you have children and you teach them something new. I remember working with my daughter and seeing her face when something ‘clicked’ with her. It’s really fun to teach someone a new skill. Don’t shy away if someone asks you to be their teacher, offer them what you have and be proud of what you know. Write tutorials for your website or make a video showing a technique. Sometimes we feel like it’s all been done before or someone else already has a video showing that, but if someone comes to you, wouldn’t it be great to show them something from you? I need to take my own advice I know.

Listen to episode 009 and let me know how you are sharing your knowledge.

Leave me a comment and let me know how you were creative today. Me, I’m hoping you have a good holiday weekend visiting family and friends.

008: Andrea House: Tickled Peach

Welcome to episode 008 of the Me Being Crafty podcast, where we explore creativity in your life.

mbc 300x300

In this episode I talk to Andrea House, of Tickled Peach, about being creative after you have children and the struggle that can come when we try to find ourselves as individuals. Andrea has two small children and struggled with post partum depression and anxiety after the birth of her boys, and for her that meant feeling alone. Social media plays a part in how we feel because we can see these perfect photo shoots of what people are making or we see the clean houses and we think we are doing something wrong with our own lives. We are not! Embrace life as it happens, whatever stage you are in, and know that your family loves you for who you are.

Andrea House

Andrea and I met years ago when both of our husbands were stationed in Washington State. I have always admired her decor and how much  thought goes into decorating for every holiday. Thanks for being on the show Andrea!

Listen to episode 008 and let me know what you did to find yourself as an individual after you had children. For a while, our lives are all about our babies, and that’s normal and okay. That’s encouraged. If you are struggling with post partum depression, please reach out to someone and get help. Call your doctor, call your best friend, tell someone so they can hold your hand as you make the changes necessary for you to be okay. When we find something we can do, that is just for us, that is us doing something creative, we can start to feel like ourselves again. I enjoyed my kids as babies and I am enjoying them as they grow up, watching them change from  being toddlers to little kids to young teenagers. That enjoyment isn’t always smiling and happy, it can be peppered with thoughts of self doubt and fraught with such a wide variety of feelings. I hope you have a hand to hold, and when you are able to, I hope creativity bursts forth.

Leave me a comment and let me know how you were creative today. Me, I’m showing my Mom our beautiful town and enjoying her company!

007: Rebecca Roach

Welcome to episode 007 of the Me Being Crafty podcast, where we explore creativity in your life.

mbc 300x300

In this episode I talk to Rebecca Roach, a quilter and quilt designer living in Austin, Texas. She and I had a great conversation about the first thing she sewed as a young girl and how that was just not fun and she wasn’t interested in sewing again for years. We talk about the tv show she watched that inspired her to take up quilting again and her journey into becoming a quilt designer and what she has coming up. Rebecca is thinking of more quilt designs and fabric designs. Living in Austin, she has access to resources that will allow her to create a small fabric collection and I am excited for what she has to come!

Rebecca and I visit about symbols used in Hawaiian quilting and how she didn’t feel comfortable using the same symbols, since being Hawaiian isn’t part of her culture. I feel the same as Rebecca and I am very aware of my culture and belief system when I am designing something because of that awareness. I would love to have fabric with Native American symbols not be pan-Indian in nature. Scratch that, I would love to have fabric designed by Native Americans. It’s an important topic for us to talk about in terms of the what is out there and is representative of who we are as a people.

Rebecca Roach

Rebecca

I am a member of the Modern Quilt Guild and one of the perks of being a member is that we receive quilt patterns that were designed by fellow guild members. Rebecca’s Broken Bars pattern was the first one we all received in January 2014 and I started following her then. I loved visiting with Rebecca and hope you enjoy our conversation. Thanks again for being on the show Rebecca!

Listen to episode 007 and let me know if you once really didn’t like the creative thing you do now. It can be a common occurrence – if we have a bad experience with something, it will take some work to bring us back to trying it out again.

Leave me a comment and let me know how you were creative today. Me, I’m designing a few baby quilts!
