Welcome to episode 043 of the Me Being Crafty podcast, where we explore creativity in your life.

mbc2 300x300

In this episode I am directing you to an interview that I did with Sandi Sawa Hazlewood, of the Crafty Planner website.

TCB

Sandi was my guest on episode 012 and she mentions that I am one inspiration for her starting her own podcast. She is currently exploring diversity in the quilting and creative community and I am happy to be a part of that. We visited about my quilting journey as well as being Native American in the quilting and creative community.

Diversity in the artist community certainly exists so it’s great to have this conversation. One of the biggest issues that I have, and I am sure that others feel this way too, is we as Native people being the ones to tell our own stories. It does no one any good when we sit back and be quiet about the stereotypes that are out there. We need to argue back when pan-Indianism and that mish mash of icons on fabric is what people see and believe that is who we are or in some way represents our lives.

You can find my interview on the Crafty Planner website and I encourage you to share your thoughts, comments, or questions you may have with me! Please end an email to tsoniki at gmail dot com

Listen to episode 043 and let me know your thoughts. In upcoming episodes I will be talking about this a bit more, I’m reaching out to friends and other Native artists to hear their thoughts as well.

Leave me a comment and let me know how you were creative today. Me, I’m working hard on bee blocks and starquilts. I have a lot of deadlines coming up!

Bee Hive Blocks I’ve Made

April 20, 2015 by Tsoniki Leave a Comment

The Bee Hive quilting bee started this year and so far I’ve made two blocks and am working on another. There are two block designs published each month, one designed by Alyce Blyth of Blossom Heart Quilts and one designed by a guest designer. So far the queen bees in my group picked the same block! The tic tac toe block is super easy to make too so that was nice for me.

March Bee Hive

For March we are making the wanta fanta block. This one looks fairly easy as well and the queen bee picked black and grey fabric for her block. Here are the fabrics I’m going to be working with:

I’m not sure which block I’m going to pick for my month, and I haven’t settled on colors either. Maybe I’ll go with scrappy and the mineral block. The mock up of what that final quilt would look like is great!

One of the best parts of visiting a new city is just walking around to see what you can see.

042: Terri Ann Swallow: Childlike Fascination

Welcome to episode 042 of the Me Being Crafty podcast, where we explore creativity in your life.

In this episode I talk to Terri Ann Swallow of Childlike Fascination. She is also the founder of QuiltAlong.net, a website that shares block of the month and quilt alongs.

Terri Ann Swallow

I found the QuiltAlong website recently and love it. Thanks again for being on the podcast Terri Ann!

I love being able to participate in a quilt along, but like Terri Ann, I often find them after they are over. I’ve completed a few quilts on my own, after the initial quilt along was started and finished, and I like the breakdown of the pattern that the person puts forward. It gives a nice stopping point for you, the quilter, as you are creating your next favorite quilt.

Terri Ann’s site, Quilt Along, has a wide variety of bom’s and qa’s for you to pick from. I found the Super Mario Brothers and the Legend of Zelda to add to my list, and I recognized a few that I’ve completed over the past few years. I hope you are able to find something you love and that you join in!

Listen to episode 042 and let me know the latest block of the month or quilt along you participated in.

Leave me a comment and let me know how you were creative today. Me, I’m finishing another baby quilt and working on starquilts.
