Christmas Eve

December 24, 2014 by Tsoniki Leave a Comment

It’s Christmas Eve! If you celebrate Christmas, I hope tonight is amazing for you.

Sometimes I really miss going to church back home in South Dakota, walking up the hill, and racing my cousins along the way. We don’t attend church regularly, hardly ever actually, but I do miss it during the holidays.

sfs-28

Tonight for us is full of good food, matching pajamas, and watching a movie or two. The kids will have a hard time sleeping I’m sure, but for the past couple (or even longer actually!) of years they have all slept in! No waking up at 5AM for them. I’ll have a breakfast casserole ready to stick in the oven so we have a good breakfast to start the day.

sfs-31

I am crazy excited for the new year. I have so much planned for the podcast, for my quilt pattern business, and our family has a lot going on too. I look forward to continuing to eat delicious food here, family and friends visiting, my language skills improving, and so much more. I’d love to hear what you have planned!

016: Lee Monroe: May Chappell

Welcome to episode 016 of the Me Being Crafty podcast, where we explore creativity in your life.

mbc2 300x300

In this episode I talk to Lee Monroe of May Chappell about her creative journey including changing her major in college to becoming a graphic designer and falling in love with quilting five years ago. Lee is the President (soon to be Vice President) of her local modern quilt guild and has turned her creative love of quilting into a business. She has published quilt patterns and is also teaching quilting classes.

Lee Monroe

I have been reading Lee’s website for a couple of years now and I just love her tutorials and the Tuesday Tip she features weekly. We talk about how the tips can feel like they are obvious things, but to someone new, seeing that tip offers a moment of clarity. Thanks again for being on the show Lee!

Lee and I had a great talk about her changing creative journey from full time graphic designer to now having a creative business. She is teaching locally in North Carolina, and expanding that in 2015. Lee has really great quilt patterns available for sale so I encourage you to check them out! She is involved in organizing the Modern Quilt Guild’s Leadership Conference that is the day after QuiltCon ends in February, 2015, in Austin, TX. I really wish I were attending because the conference looks so good!

Pablo Picasso said, “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist,” what a great quote for Lee to share. I definitely agree with this – you need a foundation to build on before you can start breaking the rules. I hope you are building your foundation so we can look forward to you breaking some rules!

Listen to episode 015 and let me know what prompted your start with being creative, did you love your crayons from the age of two? My daughter is one who has been creative from that age, and I love watching her artistic ability grow and change over the years.

Leave me a comment and let me know how you were creative today. Me, I’m planning more cookies because we gave away a batch and the kids ate what we had left. 🙂

Leather Card Holder Tutorials

December 22, 2014 by Tsoniki 1 Comment

I really love the phone cases that we have found here* because they have a small slim wallet area to hold a few things. Not a lot fits in the space, but for my kids it’s enough for their bus and lunch cards. That is great for me because despite knowing where their phones are or knowing the newest app everyone is knowing, keeping track of the lunch cards isn’t a high priority. And considering they can punch in a number or swipe the card, it almost is okay if they don’t have it. Anyway, check out this leather card holder tutorial that Ali over at a²(w) wrote. My favorite is the last one, a folded card holder with elastic. My Dad has a some leather, I’m going to have to get him to send me some so I can try making a few of these!

If you are interested in sewing with leather, check out this Craftsy class Making Leather Bags.

*These phone cases w/ a little pocket are of course probably in the US too. I just never wanted one. They were the only kind available for the phones the kids got so that’s how I found out about them.

Make 90 Ornaments with Perler Beads

December 21, 2014 by Tsoniki 1 Comment

Sometimes when I see a new to me craft or quilt idea, I just go try it versus reading and rereading the instructions. This was one of those times. I read that someone melted Perler beads into metal Christmas ornaments and I thought, “I can do that!” Here’s what happened.

After buying two packages of beads at the local toy store, my family decided we should separate them into color groups.

perlerbeads

We picked out the cookie cutters we were interested in using. This is my collection of the last 14+ years – including packages of the Wilton like the link sends you to, singles I bought at Christmas markets, and others I ordered specially. Making cookies during the holidays is a really fun family tradition and I try to go all out.

cookiecutters

And we got to filling them in! I have a lot of different shaped cookie cutters – cowboy boot, horse, lightbulb, various gingerbread men and women, a tipi, a buffalo.

inornaments

Since I didn’t read the instructions anywhere, we tried standing the beads up, laying them all down, and pouring them in. Cool tipi cookie cutter.

laydownornaments

Once they were baked in the oven (we did make the mistake and cook some higher than the rest. I recommend 175F and after a few minutes check to see how long is a good amount of time. It doesn’t take long, five to seven minutes.) I put them in the freezer to quickly cool. This didn’t change how they looked, it just let us use the cookie cutters again a few minutes faster.

And after what felt like forever, we finally finished.

bakedornaments

And we ended up with 90 ornaments.

ornaments

There were a few ways the beads came out. If they were standing up and the oven wasn’t too hot, they melted uniformly. That’s how most of them look.

ornamentstwo

But we had the oven too hot a couple of times, and this caused the beads to both melt down and bubble. See the black and grey flower with the white outline above, with the pink center? The pink center bubbled so it’s kind of a blob. I pushed it back down so it’s flat, but it did mess up the pattern.

ornamentsthree

This is what they look like if you pour the beads into a cookie cutter and fill it up about halfway or so. The beads are not standing up in this case, so they are not melted together, but merely just melted. Not even melted, but just squished out and turned into little o’s. I really like this look actually, the horse and snowman below are so cool looking!

stackedornament

And here’s what they look like if they are laying on the side versus standing up. Standing them up did give them the chance to melt nicely. Depending on the shape and how many beads were put into the cutter, the shape looked good like the horse above or looked just a little bit off like the tree below. The tree still looks good! But it could have looked better, these two are the same shape.

treeornament

We have 90 ornaments and maybe a dozen Perler beads left. Not counting the few we found after we swept the floor.

buffalonation

And of course a shout out to the Buffalo nation!

Have you ever made anything with Perler beads? This is super easy, but time consuming depending on how detailed you get. And it does take time to make the beads stand up, we used chopsticks because of course our fingers are too big to fit into the cookie cutter.
