002: Julie Dueck: The Intrepid Thread Quilt Shop

November 4, 2014 by Tsoniki Leave a Comment

Welcome to the second episode of the Me Being Crafty podcast, where we explore creativity in your life.

mbc 300x300

In this episode I talk to Julie Dueck, owner of The Intrepid Thread. Julie learned to sew at the age of six and sewed clothing all throughout her middle and high school years. We talk about how she came to own a fabric shop, the new apparal classes she’s going to be offering, and what it would be like to not have a sewing community in her life.

JulieIntrepidThread

I met Julie at a Modern Quilt Guild meeting when we were living in California. She is so nice and I am very appreciative of her being my first guest on the show! Thanks again Julie!

Where you can find The Intrepid Thread – facebook – twitter – instagram

Head on over to itunes and subscribe to Me Being Crafty so you don’t miss a show! You can also listen and subscribe to Me Being Crafty on Stitcher.

Listen to episode two and let me know what your life would be like if you didn’t have the community you have surrounded yourself with, this is going to be something I talk to other guests about as well. It’s hard for us to guess at what our lives would be like, to guess at what just isn’t there, but it’s an interesting conversation to have.

Leave me a comment and let me know how you were creative today. Me, I’m working on the wallflowers quilt along, I’ll be posting about that tomorrow!

This week has been awesome! I launched the Me Being Crafty podcast:

mbc 300x300

Check out episode zero An Introduction to the Me Being Crafty podcast and episode one Being Creative with Your Kids. I’d love to hear your thoughts, let me know how being creative has added to your life, and hey, I’d love to have you on the podcast! Email me tsoniki at gmail dot com and let me know you are interested in being a guest.

One thing that I really miss is sewing with others, in the same room as them. I don’t know anyone here that makes quilts, I’m actually not sure that I know someone that sews regularly. I would love to have someone to sew with! I know I am lucky to be able to sew every day, or at least several times a week. I was reminded of how much fun that can be when I saw pictures of the Fort Leavenworth Quilt Posse! I’m going to have to put more effort into finding a sewing buddy here.

Years ago I sold items at craft fairs, and I remember always being so nervous! I only sold at a few shows and I only sold cards that I was reselling – meaning I was a sales rep for the company, kind of like Jamberry or Pampered Chef, but this company sold cards and stationary. My tables were small and I always felt like I had to accommodate the customer. The cards I sold were in sets of four or eight, but I remember one woman wanted to buy just one from several of the sets. I ultimately let her and afterward I mixed up the cards. A lot of people have said I would do great in sales because I am so passionate about the things that I like. And you know, I can talk about the things that I love and how whatever that thing is would be great for you, but for some reason I just didn’t feel comfortable standing at a craft show. Maybe I just needed a different venue, more practice, more shows. If you are in the beginning of the craft and art fair season, check out 5 Things I Learned from My First Craft Fair for some good tips.

How about ending with a tutorial for a cross stitch quilt block! This is over at Pile O’Fabric and Alyssa’s tutorial has several sizes for you to pick from. This is a great quilt for scraps, and I have a lot. It’s time to put my kids to work organizing and cutting fabric.

How was your week?

001: Being Creative with Your Kids

October 31, 2014 by Tsoniki 2 Comments

Welcome to the first episode of the Me Being Crafty podcast, where we explore creativity in your life.

mbc 300x300

In this episode I talk to my kids about being creative, what that means to them, things they like doing, and if they remember how they expressed themselves when they were young. It was a little tough to interview them because we were sitting at the computer and they were looking at the show notes I had written down. But we did visit about being creative for a few minutes.

When you are interested in being creative with your children, in sharing some activity that you love, just share some supplies, some ideas, and watch them show you amazing things. Subscribe to the podcast and listen to episode one for a short interview with my kids and my thoughts on what it is like to be creative with them.

Check out the first episode and let me know how you create with your children. What are their favorite art or craft items to make? Do they sit on your lap to sew like so many children do? Do you let them have access to any and all supplies? Leave me a comment and let me know what your kids like to do and how you share your creative energy with them.

000: Welcome to the Me Being Crafty podcast

October 31, 2014 by Tsoniki 2 Comments

Welcome to the introductory episode of the Me Being Crafty podcast, where we explore creativity in your life.

mbc 300x300

I’m so excited to share this with you. I love podcasting and for a few months now I have wanted to get a podcast going again. There is a great class on Creative Live about storytelling and it just spoke to me, I knew that now is the right time to get started. I had a podcast years ago, and I loved it, but for a few reasons I stopped creating it. I have always wanted to get back to it and I am thrilled that I have this introductory episode to share with you now.

This introductory episode is a little of my story around creativity and being a creative person, and also a little of what the podcast is going to bring. I’d like this podcast to be a conversation about creativity, and what that means to people, and what it means to be pursuing a life where you are successful on your own terms with your creativity.

Subscribe to the podcast and I’d love to hear what you think! Leave me a comment if you would like to be a guest on the show or can think of someone awesome that you think I should contact.

I am a list maker. I’m sure I was born that way because I’ve watched my kids be list makers as well. And because of that, when I find a new way to make notes I’m willing to try it out. The scraps of paper around my desk and sewing room need to be better organized! I’m going to try the Bullet Journal out, I love moleskine notebooks and this looks like it could be very effective. I jumped right in with October even though there is only a week left and I threw away a lot of scraps of paper already. I’m using this white moleskine for my bullet journal and the bigger notebook for my podcast planning and the Stretch Yourself Challenge over at SoloSmarts.

I have an old WIP that is all about curves – and I’ve been avoiding it for ages. I have been wanting to try glue basting for quite a while now and for some reason I didn’t think I could because I don’t have one of the attachments that is out there available for this purpose. And then I saw this showing how to do so using a glue stick. Ding, ding, ding! Of course I don’t have to wait for something special to try this technique and I’m going to raid the office supply drawer we have and get to work.

I mentioned this last week, but Sharon has started her City Living Guide podcast so go check out the first episode!

I really want to make a donut quilt! I haven’t found a pattern or a picked out fabric, but the ones I’ve been seeing are so pretty. Maybe a Christmas one? Yikes, that’s fairly close actually, maybe not that particular fabric combination. I need to get a pattern so I know how much fabric to pull together.

How has your week been? We are going to a basketball game tonight with a friend, he sponsors the team so we are happy to see his banner, and enjoy some pizza and bonbon.
